Verified vs Unverified Facts: Citation Rate Comparison
Do AI systems preferentially cite facts that include verification metadata (sources, timestamps, confidence scores) over identical facts without verification? Our study of 2,000 fact pairs says yes.
Study design
- 2,000 fact pairs: identical content, one with verification metadata, one without.
- Published across matched domains with equal authority.
- Monitored citation rates in GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity over 45 days.
Citation rate results
- Verified facts cited 2.4x more frequently than unverified identical facts.
- Facts with source URLs cited 1.8x more frequently.
- Facts with timestamps cited 1.6x more frequently.
- Combined (source + timestamp + confidence): 3.1x citation advantage.
