Canonical URL
A Canonical URL is the single, authoritative web address for a piece of content. In the context of AI visibility, the canonical URL of a company profile tells AI systems which version of the data to trust as the primary source.
Definition
- A Canonical URL is designated via the <link rel='canonical'> HTML tag or the canonical property in JSON-LD.
- It prevents duplicate content confusion when the same information exists at multiple URLs.
- For company profiles, the canonical URL should point to the most complete, verified version.
Best practices
- Set one canonical URL per company profile — all other versions should reference it.
- Use absolute URLs (https://domain.com/path), never relative paths.
- Include the canonical URL in JSON-LD, HTML meta tags, and HTTP headers consistently.
- AI crawlers use canonical URLs to deduplicate and prioritize information sources.
